Mary Couts Burnett Library
TCU's Mary Couts Burnett Library has a rather unusual history.
It is named for a lady who actually had little to do with
the school and funded with a fortune that was not intended
to contribute to any institute of education. When S. Burk
Burnett died, he indicated that his estate was not to be
inherited by his wife, Mary Couts Burnett, or any school.
Mrs. Burnett, however, managed to see both happen when she
fought for the money and then gave a large portion of it
to TCU, seemingly out-of-the-blue. It was this money which
allowed TCU to build its library, and it remains the namesake
of its benefactress, Mary Couts Burnett.
